MS English
English and Language Arts for Grades 6,7, and 8
Anchored in the Truth of our Catholic faith each student is made in the image and likeness of God. Believing each has his/her unique contributions to make as part of God's wondrous plan, the goal for the English and Language Arts program for Grades 6,7, and 8 is to assist the students in becoming the best versions of themselves by helping them develop skills in speaking, reading, and writing.
It is vital for each student to be able to listen, think, speak, and write to be able to communicate clearly. In order to equip the students to more effectively do so we are implementing a curriculum from the Institute for Excellence in Writing. Through the program “Writing with Structure and Style” and “Fix It!” Grammar the students will develop competencies and skills to effectively communicate.
Each week the students will get a list of vocabulary/spelling words. They will be tested each week on the spelling and definitions of the words. The words will be taken from the Virtues in Practice program, the Dragon Slayer book being used in their Religion class and from Classical education in Greek and Latin roots. Additionally word lists will come from the books they will be reading for the Literature section of their Language Arts class.
The students will be assigned to read books for the Literature component of the class. Our list is being developed and we will post it as it progresses.
We will also be working on various Reading skills to improve comprehension and to develop advanced study skills the students will need in high school, college and beyond.
Classroom Rules
The P. R. A. Y. model: Politeness, Respect, Attention, and Yearn to Learn is our expectation for our classroom. A handout will be give to each student elaborating on what each of those terms mean and how to model them in the classroom.
Planners
The students must bring their Student Planner to class EVERY day. They will be required to write down any homework assignments and project due dates. Project due dates will be posted on this website as they are assigned.
